The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a breeding ground for young talent, but the 2026 season has produced something truly extraordinary. Fifteen-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has taken the cricketing world by storm, culminating in a jaw-dropping 29-ball 97 in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). This masterclass not only secured a vital victory but also propelled the Rajasthan Royals (RR) into the high-stakes Qualifier 2. However, amid the euphoria of Sooryavanshi’s rise, an intriguing debate has emerged regarding his opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Despite enjoying a highly productive season himself, Jaiswal suddenly finds himself in an unusual position. Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter and IPL legend Ambati Rayudu has made a bold claim, urging the Indian Test opener to part ways with the Rajasthan Royals. Rayudu believes that Jaiswal, an established international star, is being unfairly overshadowed by his teenage partner and needs a franchise where he can be the undisputed leader of the batting order.

Ambati Rayudu’s Bold Advice: Why Jaiswal Must Move On

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Ambati Rayudu did not mince words when discussing the opening dynamic at the Rajasthan Royals. While Jaiswal has been a cornerstone of the Royals’ batting lineup for several seasons, Rayudu argues that the current setup is inadvertently suppressing the left-hander’s individual star power.

“He needs to change his team because he cannot just bat with the guy and be overshadowed every single time,” Rayudu explained. “Because Jaiswal’s a star in his own right. If he goes to another team, he will win games on his own.”

According to Rayudu, Jaiswal’s pedigree as an elite top-order batsman means he should not have to play second fiddle or have his performances viewed through the lens of another player’s explosive form. Rayudu even went as far as to suggest a perfect destination for the prolific opener: the Mumbai Indians (MI). Given that Jaiswal already represents Mumbai at the domestic level, a transition to the five-time IPL champions could make perfect sense. “Mumbai Indians can be a great team to play for Jaiswal,” Rayudu added, hinting at a potentially devastating partnership in the future.

How a Split Could Benefit Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Interestingly, Rayudu’s argument isn’t just about protecting Jaiswal’s personal brand; he also believes that Jaiswal’s exit would create a healthier environment for young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi is playing with an aggressive, unrestrained freedom that has left bowlers defenseless. However, Rayudu suggests that such an explosive young talent needs a specific type of senior partner—one who isn’t competing for the spotlight.

“He needs that space and a platform, because Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will continue to overshadow people,” Rayudu remarked. “And even Sooryavanshi needs a senior partner along with him, who can deal with it and be happy for him. Be happy for what is happening and not be in contest with your opening partner.”

In Rayudu’s view, a senior partner who is content playing a purely supportive, anchoring role without the pressure of matching Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking strike rate would be the ideal foil for the teenager’s high-octane approach.

Comparing the Numbers: IPL 2026 Stats

To understand the root of Rayudu’s comments, one only needs to look at the staggering numbers both players have generated in IPL 2026 so far. Both batsmen have walked out to open the innings 15 times, but their statistical outputs tell vastly different stories:

  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: 680 runs in 15 innings, Average: 45.33, Strike Rate: 242.85 (Current Orange Cap Holder)
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal: 426 runs in 15 innings, Average: 32.76, Strike Rate: 153.23 (Three half-centuries)

By any standard IPL metric, Yashasvi Jaiswal is having an excellent tournament. He has compiled 426 runs, including three half-centuries, one of which was an electrifying, match-winning 32-ball 77* against the Mumbai Indians last month. His strike rate of 153.23 is highly competitive and keeps the pressure on opposing bowling units.

However, when placed next to Sooryavanshi’s historic run, Jaiswal’s contributions have occasionally been swept under the rug. Sooryavanshi’s strike rate of 242.85 is practically unprecedented over a 15-match stretch, meaning he routinely scores at a pace that makes even the most aggressive modern batsmen look conservative. This stark contrast is what Rayudu believes is creating an unintended rivalry or overshadowing effect at the top of the order.

Focus Shifts to Qualifier 2: Rajasthan Royals vs Gujarat Titans

While the debate over Jaiswal’s future is bound to dominate talk shows and social media, the immediate task at hand for the Rajasthan Royals is securing a place in the IPL 2026 final. Following their clinical victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator, RR is set to face the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2.

This highly anticipated clash is scheduled to take place at the Mullanpur Stadium in New Chandigarh on Friday, May 29. With the action commencing at 7:30 PM IST, all eyes will once again be on the opening pair of Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi. Whether they can coordinate their efforts to dismantle the Titans’ bowling attack remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the conversation around how these two superstars co-exist is only just beginning.
